Emotional Intelligence - it matters!

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is now at the heart of a lot of worldwide scientific research, and high on the agenda in positive psychology – plus schools and businesses have started taking a lot of notice.

Type Emotional Intelligence into Google and you'll get 54 million results!  You could therefore say we are going through a bit of an ‘Emotional Revolution' right now.

So what's all the hype about?  Well lets look at a few facts.............................

It has been scientifically proven that the higher our EI is, the better off we are.  According to Talent Smart, the world's number 1 EI business training provider:-

  • EI accounts for 58% of job performance.
  • 90% of top performers have high EI.
  • Salaries are on average £17,000.00 ($25,000.00) higher.
  • EI helps build better and stronger relationships.

Talent Smart states that:-

“Every single one point increase in Emotional Intelligence adds another £800.00 ($1,205.00) to our annual salary.  This holds true for people in all industries, at all levels, in every region of the world".

Daniel Goleman, the author of this best seller, says:

IQ now takes second position ........... four out of five companies are using EI tools to evaluate performance, and hire people”.

The University of Illinois in Chicago also did a survey of schools teaching EI and it found that “up to 50 percent of children showed improved achievement scores......attendance rose.......incidents of misbehaviour dropped by 28 percent, and...........suspensions dropped by 44 percent”.

So how can Emotional Intelligence benefit me?

Well, we all like the idea of earning more money, but there are many other ways that EI benefits us; my favourite being without a doubt that we:-

'feel better'.  Period.

But, here's some more benefits to whet your appetite:-

People with high EI feel less negative, less stressed, less angry, less overwhelmed, less anxious, less frustrated, and less discouraged.

And they also feel more positive, more calm, more resilient, more happy, more balanced, more confident, more capable, and more motivated.

And as for self-esteem, well that just builds automatically!

What's my EI score?

Would you like to know what your EI score is right now?

There are a few free tests out there, but finding good quality tests is another story - without paying for them anyway.  I have checked out most of the free tests available online, and have found these two to be the better of them:-

Queendom - Whilst this test can take 20 minutes to complete, it is extremely thorough and will give you an excellent indication of your level of EI.  It is totally anonymous by answering ‘don’t wish to answer’ on personal questions so I encourage you to be really honest as this will only be in your best interests in the long run.  Results are immediate.

About Psychology - This test takes just a few minutes to complete, however some of the questions can be ambiguous, so I can only recommend you take this test as fun as opposed to seriously.  Again, its anonymous and results are immediate.

As soon as I find a test that sits in the middle of these two, I will put it straight up here.
